Community Access has organized its programs around a simple but powerful concept: people who have received services (i.e., "former patients") possess special insights into how to best design and deliver effective services. We believe they should be made partners in the management of the organization. Furthermore, mental health recipients, or consumers, are also our customers and should be given an opportunity to choose the types of services they want. Management should, to the greatest extent possible, respond to those choices.
Toward this end, Community Access has aggressively sought to create a culture that allows us to hire staff from diverse backgrounds. Currently, about one third of our management and line staff are current or former users of mental health services.
But good intentions are not enough. Goodwill must be backed up by thoughtfully planned and well delivered services. To achieve this goal, we have sought out the best minds in the management community to assist us in creating an organizational structure that both encourages innovation, and holds executive staff accountable for program performance. Using a "management team" approach and a state-of-the-art information system, our programs are continuously monitored and adjusted to respond to the needs of our customers.
